Self Portraits

Definitely not to be taken too seriously

J J J

These self portraits are all about playing with fabrics and stitch and adding things that are relevant to yourself to build up a picture

They were such fun things to make and our workshops were really popular

More peoples work to be added soon

(please be patient while page loads)

A snapshot of my life:

This was a fun project to do, I’m not sure the face looks anything like me? But the bits and bobs added all mean something, and this was the fun part of the project.

The boats in the top right are for my husband, Mike whom I met whilst sailing in Greece, they also provide a happy memory of family holidays in France and Weymouth.

I love cooking and if I’m feeling really low then I bake a cake and my mood soon lifts.

The wellington boots are for walking, which I do most days with Maple our soft golden retriever.

All the flowers are for my garden and a love of flower arranging that I picked up from my Mother.

The British flag comes from an old T-shirt I had, that then became one of my daughter’s favourite to wear.

I was born in England and the blanket I used to back these portraits was made in England.

Part of the background is made from home magazines, and most important to me are my family, friends and a welcoming home.

Hair: My once long black curly hair has now become my short straight white hair, hence the yarn - black and grey, long and short, curly and straight.

Glasses: For distance only, so on off, on off, and often found on top of my head.

Apple: I’ve always had rosy red cheeks. I never could wangle a day off school because I always looked so healthy. Also, I was brought up in Kent, the Garden of England, which was once famous for apple trees.

Rose: An English Rose - I’m half English,

Shamrock: And half Irish.

Crab: Born in July makes me a Cancerian. The beads and shells represent the beach. Cancer is a water sign - I love the seaside and love to be near water.

Moon: The ruling planet of Cancer. The moon is placed on my forehead to symbolize constantly changing thoughts and moods.

Ruby & Pearl: The gemstone and the moonstone for Cancer.

Teddy: A mini version of my childhood teddy bear.

Cats & Chickens: I love cats, I only have 2 but it seems that 8 of them have crept in here. My chickens make great pets too, very funny individual personalities.

Book & Bookmark: I love books. I’m always reading and usually have at least two or three on the go at any one time.

Pen, Pencils & Paintbrush: I like to write, I love words and wordplay, stories and poems. I like to paint, draw, sketch and doodle.

Laptop: I'm never very far from my computer!

Dolly: This is Looby Loo, from TV’s Andy Pandy, my father nicknamed me after this doll character.

Sewing stuff: Of course.

Wine bottle, corkscrew and glass: A Friday night glass of red – what, you thought I had no vices ?? J
